Training for Real in Uganda

Delivering sustainable water and sanitation services depends on people; professionals and the public need to work together if an adequate service is going to be available to everybody.

These people need resources, such as money, materials and equipment to transform natural water sources into a water supply that can improve people's lives.

Most of all they need the skills and knowledge to use these resources to the best of their ability. This knowledge is often hidden and difficult to measure, but without it, any investments in water and supply are wasted.

Professionals in the sector come out of school and university with a foundation of knowledge; as they get more experience, their knowledge grows, but often the skills they need change. This may be because the job they are doing changes (people managing a project need different skills to those designing a water supply scheme) or it may be because other factors change (computers are used, the law changes). Learning new skills and knowledge helps people to do their job more efficently. This is often called capacity building.

However it is not good enough just to do any training course; the training has to reflect the skills and knowledge needed for the job. The Training for Real project brings together the people who provide professional training (universities and colleges) with the people who need it (employers and employees in the public and private sector) - to make sure that the training available is the right training, offered to the right people at the right time. This is not training for the sake of training; this is Training for Real.

This project website is a resource that will develop as the project proceeds, with information about the work being carried out, links to resources available and news of activities undertaken by the people and organizations involved. If you want to know more - contact us
