This session will explore performance improvement strategies for enhancing utilities’ financial sustainability and climate-resilience. Led by USAID’s WASH-FIN 2, the session will highlight tools and impactful performance improvement case studies from Kenya. A facilitated Q&A will round out the session.
The first presentation will focus on the piloting of WASH-FIN 2’s Performance Improvement Tool designed and implemented to help utilities prioritize interventions for rapid cost recovery improvement and access to available finance. Speakers from WASH-FIN 2 in Kenya will address the tool’s development, piloting, and potential for broader applications.
The next two presentations will summarize the performance improvement journeys and strategies employed by MAWASCO and NAIVAWASCO. In only a few years, MAWASCO significantly improved its national ranking, expanded coverage, and reduced non-revenue water, enabling MAWASCO to access additional finance and serve as a model in Kenya and beyond. NAIVASCO implemented a novel approach to finance utility-wide solarization by engaging the private sector. Both utilities are now being supported by WASH-FIN 2 with technical assistance and small scale construction to amplify gains.
The final presentation will discuss performance improvement through investment in solarization and metering at IWASCO and TWASCO. An updated analysis from WASH-FIN 2’s recent work will demonstrate these investments’ potential commercial viability, potential for broader adoption, and impact on service delivery and sustainability.
This session aims to foster knowledge exchange and inspire practical applications of various approaches and lessons learned to enhance service delivery, financial sustainability, and climate resilience.
