On a visit to a water-supply scheme, it is usually possible to spot any faults and deficiencies that could lead to the contamination of potable water if you know what you are looking for. Sanitary surveying is a formal inspection technique that records visible problems, enabling fieldworkers and community leaders to assess the likely quality of the water, relative to other sources, and to take remedial action.
